Joseph Mallord William "J. M. W." Turner

Joseph Mallord WilliamTurner was a British Romantic landscape painter, water-colourist, and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting.

His work was exhibited when he was still a teenager. His entire life was devoted to his art. Unlike many artists of his era, he was successful throughout his career.

One story about Turner, though it likely has little basis in reality, states he had himself "tied to the mast of a ship in order to experience the drama" of the elements during a storm at sea.
